Communication and discussion were the name of the game during Tuesday evening's joint meeting between the Greenville City Council and the Montcalm County Transportation Authority (MCTA).

The MCTA plans to seek a 0.3-mill property tax increase in November to pay for operating a countywide bus system. The board hopes that the city of Greenville will support the cause.

The proposal, called The Montcalm Ride, would have an annual budget of about $1.25 million. About half of the funding would come from local fares ranging from $1 to $3 and the local property tax. About 35 percent of the money would come from state funding, with 16 percent coming from the federal government.

Greenville currently offers bus services within the city and Eureka Township. The MCTA board is asking the city to consider merging its fleet with the countywide service, providing buses and maintenance services for the entire county.
