BELDING, Mich.— Work on the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trail is on track to start next spring, according to Belding City Manager Meg Mullendore.

Mullendore says organizations and businesses have offered approximately $70,000 in donations for the project, but many of them cannot commit the money until their new fiscal year begins. On Tuesday, August 20, the Belding City Council voted on whether to commit and advance the funding, as required by the state.

Mullendore says the trail would run through Belding, connecting in Lowell and Greenville to create the longest trail of its kind in the state.  The $1.8 million trail would be mostly paved and include three covered bridges.

Mullendore says if all goes well, the trail would be finished by the summer of 2014.
