My Town Belding: WWI monument closer to reality

My Town Belding: WWI monument closer to reality

BELDING, Mich.—Visitors to the Belding Veterans Park now have a place to sit.

Project leader Denny Craycraft says the park now has six benches.  Two of those benches were donated by Belding Tank, which also made a sizable donation toward bricks for the WWI monument.  Lake Design and Gerref Industries also donate to the effort.

Craycraft, who is a Vietnam veteran, has been working on adding park memorials for local veterans of every war since July 2010.  The World War I monument will feature the names of 135 area veterans who served in the war.  It will be the fourth monument installed at the park.  The most recent addition was a Korean War Monument, which was dedicated on Veterans Day, last November.

For more information or to donate, call Craycraft at (616) 550-6990.

My Town Greenville: Public meetings over proposed millage hike April 21

GREENVILLE, Mich.—Greenville Public Schools will hold two meetings for community members to learn more about an upcoming millage vote.

The district is asking voters to approve a hike in the Montcalm County special education millage, from 2.1878 mills to 3.5 mills. Supporters say Montcalm County has the lowest special education millage in the eight-county area.  A special election will take place May 6.

The special education millage informational meetings are scheduled for Monday, April 21, at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. inside the Central Services Facility, located at 1414 Chase Street in Greenville.

My Town Greenville: MAISD seeks approval of special education millage hike

My Town Greenville: MAISD seeks approval of special education millage hike

GREENVILLE, Mich.— Montcalm County residents are encouraged to head to the polls May 6 to vote on a proposed special education millage.

According to the website for Greenville Public Schools, special education costs the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District $4.7 million, but only $2.1 million is covered by local, state and federal government funding.  The remaining $2.6 million is taken out of the MAISD’s general fund, which impacts all education programming.

The district says Montcalm County has not increased its special education millage since 1988, when there were approximately one-third fewer special education students countywide.  The county’s special education millage rate of 2.1878 is the lowest in the eight-county area.  The MAISD is asking voters to approve raising the millage to a total of 3.50 mills, generating enough funding to keep the MAISD from dipping into its general fund.
