Police: Man killed girlfriend, set house on fire | News
SPENCER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 29-year-old woman is dead and her 51-year-old boyfriend is jailed in connection with her murder.
Around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Kent County Sheriff's deputies were sent to a house on Lincoln Lake Road to investigate a homicide. There, they found Danielle Scholton-Linderman, 29, dead.
The victim and her live-in boyfriend, Scott Hammer, 51, were staying with family at the Spencer Township house while their home in Montcalm County was being renovated.
Authorities say a early Wednesday morning, a struggle ensued between the victim and Hammer and Scholton-Linderman died.
The suspect's brother, Burt Hammer talked to WZZM 13 News about what happened, "He just said he screwed up and I said what did you do now?," he told WZZM 13 News. "He said I killed Danny. I said no you didn't. He said yep she is in the basement."
Burt Hammer says he and his wife tried to perform CPR on Scholton-Linderman but they were unsuccessful.
Police say Scott Hammer then drove to the couple's house on Wise Road in Sheridan Township and set their farmhouse on fire. Montcalm County investigators say Hammer also tried to burn a barn on the property but was unsuccessful.
A neighbor tells WZZM 13 Scholton-Linderman was a mother of two children.
Hammer's brother says the couple fought over messages he found on her phone, "He checked her phone for text messages last night and there were some inappropriate text messages and they had an argument and it escalated from there."
Scott Hammer is jailed ay the Kent County Correctional Facility and will be charged with murder. The arson is being investigated by the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall.
