My Town: Skate park opens in Belding

BELDING, Mich.-- A new attraction is open in Belding, just in time for the long holiday weekend.

On July 2, Keven Krieger posted video on the Sk8 Belding Facebook page of the first skateboarders and BMX bicylists using Leppinks Skate Park.  Krieger says the youth were looming around the grounds, so once the skate park was finished, the contractor decided to pull the fence down and let them enjoy the new space.

Leppinks Skate Park is named after the local grocery store.  Krieger says the project was paid for entirely by local donors.  The skate park replaces an old roller hockey rink in Central Riverside Park.  Krieger says the city demolished the rink before Portland, Oregon-based Evergreen Skateparks began designing and building the new grounds in early June.

Krieger says crews finished adding black dirt and sowing grass seed around the course Wednesday night.  Project leaders expect to install signs for the park ahead of its official ribbon cutting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8 at 2 p.m.

Leppinks Skate Park is free to the public.
