Baldwin man gets prison for drunk driving crash that killed friend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Barely old enough to legally drink, a 21-year-old man who caused an alcohol-related crash in July that killed his friend in northeast Kent County was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

Joshua Lucas Runnels was handed a 7 to 15-year sentence for drunken driving causing death for the July 23 crash in Kent County's Oakfield Township that killed Charles Gregory Samuel of Greenville.

Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Buth also sentenced him to serve 2 to 5 years for drunken driving causing serious injury. The terms will run concurrent.

The Baldwin man pleaded no contest earlier this month to drunken driving causing death and drunken driving causing serious injury. In exchange for his plea, reckless driving and habitual offender charge was dismissed.

Greenville briefly home to country's lowest gas prices

GREENVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Drivers are enjoying the relatively low gas prices we're seeing in West Michigan.

Prices in Greenville were so low Monday morning that GasBuddy.com said they were the cheapest fuel prices in the nation. The price dipped to $2.55 per gallon for regular unleaded.

Gas experts several Greenville gas stations were competing with each other to have the lowest price, and those that got down to $2.55 were losing about 35 cents per gallon at that point.

Spectrum Health designated a "baby-friendly" destination

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (WZZM) -- Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital is now a designated baby-friendly destination, according to Baby Friendly USA, an organization that promotes breastfeeding.

Just 10 percent of hospitals in the country have achieved this designation.

Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville was also designated; the two are the only ones with the designation in West Michigan.

Two years ago, Spectrum Health started implementing ten changes to its maternity department.

One of them is keeping the baby in the room, instead of sending it to the nursery. The other is promoting breastfeeding.

St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish Will Host Juried Arts and Crafts Show With 1,000 Items Nov. 14-15

GRAND HAVEN, Mich., OCT. 10, 2014―Over 1,000 arts and crafts items from among 50 vendors will be featured for the general public and Christmas shoppers during the St. Patrick―St. Anthony Parish Juried Arts & Crafts Show.  The event will be held Friday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the parish Family Center.

 

St. Patrick―St. Anthony Parish is located at 920 Fulton Street, directly off Highway 31 in Grand Haven.  Anyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge for admission.

 

The parish’s “MOM’s Group” will put on a festive luncheon both days, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Attendees may choose from among a display of hearty soups, salads, quiche and desserts available.

 

“We are encouraging anyone to come and make it a ladies day outing, as this event coincides with the opening day of deer-hunting season,” said Ellen Valdez, St.

Teen injured in crash was trying to fishtail truck

HOWARD CITY, Mich. (WZZM) -- Montcalm County Sheriff's deputies say a teen girl was trying to get her pickup truck to fishtail on a dirt road when it overturned.

The crash happened Friday night on Washburn Street, just east of Sycamore Street.

Deputies say the 16-year-old Howard City girl lost control and her 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck ran off the north edge of the roadway. After getting the vehicle back on the road, the truck rolled more than once.

She was taken to Spectrum Butterworth in Grand Rapids with critical injuries. Two passengers, also teen girls, were taken to the hospital by private vehicle and treated and released.
