My Town Greenville: School asking for child clothing donations

GREENVILLE, Mich.—The Baldwin Heights Elementary School is asking for clothing donations for children.

According to the school’s Facebook page, the office is in need of girls and boys pants size 5 and 6.  Donations can be dropped off at the office, located at 821 West Oak Street in Greenville.

My Town Greenville: Elementary schools to host Crazy Hair Day for Kids Cancer

GREENVILLE, Mich.—Hair will be everywhere Friday, Feb. 21 as every elementary school in the Greenville Public School district hosts Crazy Hair Day for Kids Cancer.

Students who want to wear their hair however they’d like must donate at least $0.25.  The donations will go to the Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation, which raises money for alternative therapies and treatments for children with cancer.

GREENVILLE, Mich.— Greenville Public Schools has a new trophy to add to its case.

On Saturday Feb. 8, the district took first place for most money raised by a school district during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge.  According to the Baldwin Heights Elementary Facebook page, this is the fourth consecutive year the Frozen Jackets have taken the title, thanks to community support.

It’s also the fourth year Baldwin Heights Elementary Principal Michael Walsh has taken the icy plunge himself, which you can watch on YouTube here.

Elementary students prepare to scrub up for surgery Feb. 14

GREENVILLE, Mich.---  While many students will be trading candy hearts on Valentine’s Day next Friday, students at Baldwin Heights and Lincoln Heights elementary schools will be conducting open heart surgery alongside doctors.

This is the third year for the district’s Mini Medical School.  For half of the school day, fifth grade students will learn all about the medical industry, from performing CPR under the instruction of Montcalm Community College nursing students, to examining blood samples under a microscope and even performing fake surgery alongside doctors from Spectrum Health United Hospital.

Classes to cut into summer break for Greenville Public Schools

GREENVILLE, Mich.--  At least one West Michigan school district is already extending its academic year, because of the recent winter storms.

Greenville Superintendent Peter Haines sent a letter home to parents Monday, explaining how the district will handle the recent spate of school cancellations.  In the letter, Haines writes, “This has certainly been a winter unlike most in the last several years.”

Haines says the school calendar has been updated to extend classes into the second week of June, to regain some of the lost days.

Ice Fishing Tournament on Baldwin Lake Feb. 1

GREENVILLE, Mich.—Students and parents are encouraged to break out their fishing poles and head to Baldwin Lake this weekend for the Walnut Hills PTO Ice Fishing Tournament.

The event starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 and runs until 1 p.m. The top anglers will be rewarded with cash prizes. There will also be a raffle drawing.  Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children 16 and under.

Date set for Belding Community Showcase

 BELDING, Mich.—The date is set for this year’s Belding Community Showcase.

On Thursday, April 17, students, school staff, organizations and businesses will come together o showcase their activities and projects.  The displays and demonstrations will take place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. throughout Belding High School.  Participants can also stop at snack stations that will be located around the building.
