Greenville business has new weapon against bed bugs: Sherlock

Greenville business has new weapon against bed bugs: Sherlock

GREENVILLE, Mich.—The newest member of a pest control team in Greenville promises to do what no human can.

Sherlock is a certified Canine Pest Inspector.  The black Labrador retriever can detect bed bugs by scent.  With help from his handler, Alec Dakin, Sherlock recently finished a two week bed bug training course in North Carolina, and now works for SureShot Pest Control, LLC.

SureShot Pest Control says a certified canine can detect even one viable bedbug egg, allowing crews to catch infestations early, saving homeowners money.   The company says canine inspections also take less time than a typical human inspection and are more successful, with an accuracy rate as high as 90 percent.

A 2010 survey by the University of Kentucky and the National Pest Management Association found 88 percent of companies called to a bed bug infestation treated the problem in single-family homes.
