Fire Chief: Frigid temperatures can lead to more fires

Fire Chief: Frigid temperatures can lead to more fires

GRATTAN TOWNSHIP, Mich.— Firefighters are dealing with more fires because of the cold weather.

Friday morning, a pole barn fire threatened the lives of livestock inside.  Grattan Township Fire Chief Louis Kirkbride says the animals made it out safely before the fire was put out. It’s unclear what sparked the flames.

Kirkbride says the frigid temperatures gripping West Michigan are making it more difficult for crews to quickly extinguish fires.

“It’s eight below right now, I do believe.  So fighting a fire is always a job,” he says.

Kirkbride offers this tip to homeowners: “It’s very cold out there.  People have a tendency to overload their woodstoves.  Don’t do that.  You’ll start a chimney fire.”

Kirkbride also encourages homeowners to closely watch the common causes of fires, including fireplaces, candles and portable heaters.

Baldwin Heights Elementary still cleaning up from November storm

GREENVILLE, Mich.—A strong storm that swept through the Greenville area on November 17 is still impacting Baldwin Heights Elementary School.

Administrators are moving the school’s Winter Music Concerts from the high school auditorium to the middle school cafeteria as crews continue to clean up storm damage to the auditorium roof.  Music teacher Jenny Allen says the stage area will not be ready in time for the performances on December 9.  Each grade will hold a separate 45 minute performance to ensure there is enough seating for parents and guests. Kindergarten students will kick off the concert at 6 p.m., followed by the first grade performance at 6:45 p.m. and a second a grade performance at 7:30 p.m.

Allen is also looking for a parent to digitally record the concert for class review.  If you’d like to help, e-mail allenje@greeville.k12.mi.us.
